Sami flag days

These flag days mark important historical events and individuals within Sami culture and politics.

February 6: Sami National Day is celebrated in memory of the first Sami national assembly in Trondheim in 1917.

March 2: The Sami Parliament in Finland was reconstituted and inaugurated in 1996.

March 25: Annunciation Day is a traditional Sami feast day.

Midsummer Day: Official holiday.

August 9: International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples recognized by the United Nations.

August 15: The Sami flag was approved on this day in 1986.

August 18: The Sami Council was formed on this day in 1956.

August 26: The Sami Parliament in Sweden was inaugurated on this day in 1993.

October 9: The Sami Parliament in Norway was inaugurated on this day in 1989.

November 9: The Delegation for Sami Affairs in Finland was inaugurated on this day in 1973.

November 15: Isak Saba was born on this day in 1875. He wrote the lyrics to what later became the Sami national anthem.

November 29: Elsa Laula was born in Tärnaby in 1877.

 

 

A flag - a people

The Sami people reside in four countries (Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Russia). They do not have their own nation-state, but the Sami flag has flown in these lands since 1986. It was approved by the Nordic Sami Council at a conference in Åre, Sweden.

The flag was designed by Astrid Båhl from Norway. Neither the colors nor the symbols are random. The circle is a symbol for both the sun and the moon. The sun circle is red, and the moon circle is blue. The colors of the flag, red, blue, green, and yellow, come from the traditional Sami costume, the "kolt"
